KI Potassium Iodide Pills – RadBlock

$59.95

In case of a radioactive disaster, Radblock Potassium Iodide Pills are a great item to have in your kit. If taken promptly and in the correct dose, they saturate your thyroid glands. This blocks radioactive iodines from being absorbed, reducing the risk of conditions like hyperthyroidism, thyroiditis, and thyroid cancer from radioactive exposure.

We recommend using Radblock in combination with other protective measures like evacuation or sheltering in place.

RADBLOCK 200 Potassium Iodide Pills – 65MG

KI Canada has been producing Health Canada approved RadBlock 200 Potassium Iodide Pills since 2003. Their products are used by Ontario Power Generation, Bruce Power, and the Canadian Government. The tablets have a 12 year shelf life and are the best protection for their price against thyroid problems in case of nuclear emergencies.

Recommended purpose: Thyroid blocking agents, like potassium iodide pills, should be used in addition to other protective measures. Evacuation is the most effective protective method against radiation because it protects the whole body. But for situations where evacuation isn’t an option, potassium iodide and sheltering in place are prudent and inexpensive protections.

Each tablet contains:
Potassium (Potassium iodide) 15.3 mg
Iodine (Potassium iodide) 49.7 mg

Frequently Asked Questions About Potassium Iodide Pills

What is potassium iodide?

Potassium iodide is a salt, similar to table salt, and its chemical symbol is KI. It is routinely added to table salt to make it ‘iodized’. Potassium iodide, if taken in time and at the appropriate dosage, blocks the thyroid gland’s uptake of radioactive iodine. This can reduce the risk of thyroid cancers and other diseases that might be caused by exposure to radioactive iodine. Radioactive iodine can be dispersed by a dirty bomb, nuclear power plant failure, and other nuclear events.

Potassium iodide is a special kind of protective measure in that it offers very specialized protection.  Potassium iodide protects the thyroid gland against internal uptake of radio iodine that may be released in the unlikely event of nuclear exposure.

What is the benefit of taking potassium iodide during a radiological accident?

When potassium iodide is ingested, it is absorbed by the thyroid gland. In the proper dosage, and taken at the appropriate time, it will effectively saturate the thyroid gland in such a way that inhaled or ingested radioactive iodines will not be accumulated in the thyroid gland.  The risk of thyroid effects is reduced.  Such thyroid effects could include thyroiditis, hypothyroidism, thyroid nodules, and thyroid cancer.

Can individual members of the public obtain potassium iodide pills?

Health Canada has approved potassium iodide as an over-the-counter medication.  As with any medication, individuals should check with their doctor or pharmacist before using it.
