Getting Prepared for Summer Activities, Part 2

Fishing boat

Going Fishing

If you’re an early riser even when you don’t have to be at work, fishing might be the summer activity for you! And if you don’t suffer from seasickness and find the rocking of a boat hypnotizing while you read or study the ripples on a lake’s surface, it might even be one of your new favourite activities!

If you’re a newbie fisherman, you might want to consider these safety tips before embarking on your fishing adventure:

  1. Bring a friend, bonus if they’ve fished before and can pass on some useful instruction!
  2. Keep fishing knives sharp and keep blades covered while not in use. Handle with care.
  3. Pack a hearty lunch, plus some extra food and water.
  4. Wear thin layers of clothing with outer layers that protect you from the wind and water, including a life jacket as your outermost layer.
  5. Research the waterfront where you’re planning to fish, the evening before you go fishing, checking that the weather forecast looks safe as well.
  6. Bring along extra safety items, such as first aid kit, a flashlight, a map, a fully charged cell phone and a radio.
  7. Wear waterproof sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, even if weather conditions are overcast.
  8. Consider wearing or at least bringing along insect repellent, especially if you’re fishing in a marshy area.
  9. Use caution when baiting and removing hooks.
  10. Handle fish with care!

Fishing is not intrinsically a dangerous sport but because you’ll be out in nature which is full of unknowns, it’s wise to proceed with caution and a healthy respect.

If you have any other safety tips based on your own experiences, please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!
