Building a Nutritious Emergency Kit

Nutritious Fruits and Veggies

When you are building an emergency kit, you want to ensure that you have enough nutritious food to be self-sufficient for up to 2 weeks! That’s at least 1200 calories per day, per person. Of course, depending on your size and activity level, you may want to add more.

You want to keep your energy and your strength up so that you can face whatever hardships lie ahead with the best of your ability! You want your mind to be clear so you can make the safest and most resourceful decisions, and so you can protect the people around you, as well as yourself.

Below are a few tips to consider when you’re stocking up on emergency food:

  • Avoid salty snacks because they will make you thirsty!
  • Look for high-energy foods, such as our delicious 400 calorie food bars by SOS
  • Don’t forget about water. It’s the number one top priority when it comes to your survival during an emergency. Plan at least 1 gallon per person per day.
  • Every few months, you should check all of the expiry dates on your packaged food and water to maintain freshness.
  • Stick with what you know how to prepare, and teach yourself or practice preparing the meals that you’re including, ahead of time.
  • Last but not least, include protein! Our bodies do not store protein, so we need to continually replenish it. Nuts, protein bars, and peanut butter are all good options to include. You might also want to try our new Freeze-Dried Diced Beef or Freeze-Dried Diced Chicken to keep you full and energized.
