Emergency Preparedness Education in Canada

If you’re someone who’s keen to go in-depth with emergency preparedness— beyond just knowing what to put in your survival kit—you might be wondering about what kinds of programs are available in Canada.

A good place to start is Public Safety Canada, where you can get an education on our national policies and plans surrounding disaster mitigation, risk assessments, emergency management training and communications interoperability.

You can also learn more about our national Disaster Assistance Programs. The government’s biggest offering is made through the Disaster Financial Assistance Arrangements, but the responsibility for safety is much farther reaching. Here in Canada, our emergency management responsibilities are shared by federal, provincial and territorial governments, non-government organizations, business owners and individual citizens. This means that you can play a part!

In 2017, Canada will host the Fifth Regional Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in the Americas, to discuss opportunities for collaboration and coordination within the framework of reducing disaster risks.

The government of Canada is also planning to invest over $120 billion in infrastructure over the next 10 years, including improvements that will help our nation withstand the impact of climate change.

We want a Canada that is safe and resilient! And if we’re going to be as prepared to survive and succeed as we can, then we need to be taking action on an individual level and not leaving everything up to our government.

We hope you can find some time to learn more about our country’s plans to stay safe, and that you’ll find yourself sharing what you learn with the people around you!
